Tigers Fall To USCB

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Jon Schmidt hit a grand slam in the first inning to lead USC Beaufort to a 15-6 victory over Savannah State at Tiger Field.

Leading 5-4, the Sharks scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to put the game away.

Savannah State falls to 3-4 while USCB, who is in their first year of competition, improved to 13-10.

The teams combined for 22 hits, getting 11 hits apiece.

Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the second, Savannah State scored once in the inning as Tristan Smith doubled home Matt Oglesby, who earlier singled.

The Tigers added two more runs in the third. Jonathan Ross singled and came home after Brett Pointer blasted a home run down the left field line to trim USCB's lead to 4-3.

The Sharks scored once in the fourth but SSU loaded the bases in the sixth but could only bring one runner home as Dexter Kelley scored on a single by Oglesby. Kelly reached base when he was hit by a pitch.

USCB plated seven runners off four hits in the top of the eighth to break the game open. Savannah State loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but once again were only able to bring one runner home when David Washington drew a walk to bring home Andrew Mendez who earlier reached base after hitting a double.

The Sharks scored twice more in the top of the ninth to go ahead 16-4. SSU added a run in their last at bat. Kelley walked and later came home on a single by Julius Green.

Ross, Oglesby and Smith each had two hits for the Tigers while Kelly scored twice.

Seven players scored twice for USCB.

Mark Sherrod worked three innings on the mound for SSU and took the loss. Sherrod struck out four and gave up only one hit but gave up four runs.

Nick Rhodes earned the win for the Sharks, giving up five hits and three runs in five innings.
