Tigers Fall to Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C.- Savannah State saw its losing streak reach four games as the Tigers dropped a 47-10 decision to Charleston Southern before a crowd of 3,023 at Buccaneer Field.

The loss dropped SSU to 1-4 while the Buccaneers improved to 2-3.

A.J. DeFilippis, who made his first start at quarterback for SSU, had a career day, throwing for 124 yards while completing 12 of 18 passes. He also threw two interceptions.

Charleston Southern raced out to a 26-0 lead in the second quarter and led 33-7 at the half.

Gerald Stevenson scored on runs of 7 and 17 yards to give CSU a 14-0 edge in the first quarter.

AJ Toscano threw a touchdown pass early in the second and John Paglia kicked a pair of field goals midway in the second for a 26-0 lead.

Savannah State got on the scoreboard with 5:40 left in the quarter as Justin Babb scored on a 16 yard run. Derek Williams converted the extra point to cut the Tigers deficit to 26-7.

The SSU scoring drive took five plays and covered 70 yards. Big plays on the drive were a 32 yard catch by Deleon Hollinger and a 21 yard reception by Deron Talley.

Just before halftime Toscano threw his second touchdown pass of the day that gave the Bucs a 33-7 advantage which they took into intermission.

CSU went ahead 40-7 with less than five minutes left in the third but Savannah State opened the fourth quarter with a scoring drive that took up eight plays and 47 yards as Williams booted a 28 yard field goal with 12:10 left in the game.

During the drive, Byron Leggett had a 25 yard reception on the drive and Babb added a 27 yard run.

On CSU's next drive, the Bucs drove to the Savannah State 28 before Justin Cooper intercepted the pass at the 19 and returned it 15 yards to the SSU 34.

SSU gave the ball right back as DeFilippis was picked off by Charleston Southern's Shawn King at the 43 and returned it 34 yards to the SSU nine. Three plays later, CSU scored the final points of the game as Jordan Belser threw a six yard touchdown pass to Michael Jefferson with 6:47 left.

CSU racked up 528 yards of offense while Savannah State gained 266 (150 passing & 116 rushing).

Babb ran for 81 yards and a touchdown for SSU while Hollinger caught five balls for 55 yards. Chris Asbury had a career-high 11 tackles for the Tigers.

Toscano passed for 230 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a team-high 78 yards. Stevenson caught 8 passes for 91 yards and ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Kuzdale had six tackles.
